The Virtual Learning Community is built on flexibility, choice, and individualised programs. Many traditional models of Distance Education offer paper-based booklets that are issued at the start of the term and marked at the end, with little or no interaction from a teacher. Other programs offer a check-in with a teacher once or twice a week, to offer assistance when needed. In building the Virtual Learning program, it was vital to us that we provided an innovative platform where students could engage with experienced, quality teachers on a daily basis, just as they would in a physical classroom. This gives them the opportunity to ask questions, explore concepts and build relationships with both their peers and teachers in a safe and supportive online environment. Students who like to work independently have the opportunity to do so, while students who require extra support and guidance are able to access this as needed.
Another feature that sets the VLC apart from other Distance Education schools is the opportunity students have to come onto campus for co-curricular activities. Local students can participate in everything from choirs to mountain-biking, instrumental tutorials to interschool sport. Last week, three of our Senior VLC students featured in our school musical, “The Pirates of Penzance”. Bella Grinev, Anastasia Grinev and Georgia Slaymaker lit up the stage with their cast mates as they told the story of the hilarious pirates and their adventures.
