In today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom is a hot topic. Some may wonder if this is just a passing trend or if AI is here to stay. Let’s explore why AI is becoming an indispensable part of education and how it aligns with Hillcrest’s values in its Virtual Learning and Distance Education programs.

How AI Enhances Student Learning

John Hattie’s acclaimed educational research highlights the significant impact of timely feedback on student learning, showing that feedback is one of the most powerful influences on learning and achievement. AI can facilitate this by providing immediate, data-driven feedback, helping students to improve continuously in both virtual learning environments and traditional classrooms. AI can also assist students in brainstorming and gathering resources for their projects. By providing access to a vast array of information and tools, AI-powered education tools help students develop their ideas and find the materials they need to complete their assignments. This not only enhances their research skills but also encourages creativity and critical thinking, integral components of Distance Education.

Introducing TrekAI

VLC students are currently trialling an exciting AI product called TrekAI. TrekAI is designed to support both teachers and students by providing a range of AI-driven tools that enhance the educational experience within the Hillcrest Virtual Learning Community.

Hillcrest’s Values and AI

At Hillcrest Christian College, we stand firm on promoting our core values of integrity, courage, service, humility, diligence, discernment, and respect. By incorporating AI into our educational practices, we teach students to understand that AI-generated content isn’t always truthful or accurate. This encourages them to question and verify the information they read, fostering a mindset of thoughtful decision-making and critical thinking. By adding the human element, students learn to balance AI’s capabilities with their own discernment, ensuring they can trust and judge the quality and reliability of the information they use.

AI Fostering Diligence and Integrity

AI promotes diligence by helping students stay organised and manage their time effectively, especially in Distance Education settings. With adaptive learning technologies, students can set reminders, track their progress, and receive timely feedback, encouraging them to work hard and persevere through challenges. This fosters a culture of dedication and resilience, motivating students to put in their best effort and achieve their academic goals, both in physical and virtual classrooms.

The use of AI also upholds integrity by ensuring academic honesty. AI tools can detect plagiarism and verify the originality of students’ work, promoting a culture of honesty and trustworthiness. By understanding the importance of producing their own work and valuing the efforts of others, students learn to uphold high standards of integrity in all their academic endeavours, regardless of whether they study in a traditional setting or through Distance Education.

The Future of AI in Education

AI in education is not just a passing trend; it is a transformative tool that is here to stay. By embracing AI in schools, we can provide personalised, accessible, and engaging learning experiences for all students. As Christian educators, it is our responsibility to harness the potential of AI in a way that aligns with our values and enhances our mission to educate and inspire the next generation.
