Boarding School or Distance Education? Could Virtual Learning be the answer?

For many remote Queensland families, boarding school seems to be an inevitable step in their child’s education, whether or not it is the right move for the young person. With education systems evolving, there are now other options for families who don’t want to separate their family unit.

While boarding school may have traditionally been the only option for rural parents wanting an academically rigorous, teacher-led curriculum for their child, there were many disadvantages to going down this path. Steep increases to boarding school fees, rising rates of anxiety, changing family dynamics, feelings of being homesick, being away from the family property/business, and the challenging social dynamics of a new school environment, are just a few of the reasons why some parents struggle to decide on a boarding school pathway for their child’s education. An evolving education system means that there are now other options in place for families that wish to keep their children in the family home throughout their teenage years.

At Hillcrest, we have provided an option for families to remain together, while students complete their education in a supportive, teacher-led environment, that guides students through quality, academic programs, right from Prep through to Year 12. We do the hard work for parents; live, teacher-led lessons and Teacher Help Desk sessions give students the chance to interact online with specialist teachers on a daily basis. We take care of the unit planning, delivery, marking, and reporting, leaving parents to provide the safe home environment that young people desire. There is no longer a need to leave the family home to experience the benefits of boarding, such as social interaction, growing independence, making friends, gaining structure, extra-curricular activities, school camps, exposure to diversity, and networking opportunities; all these – and more – are embedded in the Virtual Learning Community program. No-one knows your child like you, so if you are looking for an affordable, independent school education option other than boarding to best support your child, contact the friendly team at the Virtual Learning Community today at hellovlc@hillcrest.qld.edu.au or discover more about us at www.hillcrestvlc.school.
