Their focus was on long-term alternatives to traditional schooling models, and how schooling systems could utilise new platforms to change the way we ‘do school’.
One of the recommendations included ‘Explore different time and schooling models’:
“The need to explore how students can learn in different places and at different times will help countries better understand the potential of digital learning solutions and bring communities, homes, and schools closer together. Students are used to a busy school timetable and workload, but new solutions may be explored to provide students with opportunities to have more agency by being given more autonomy. This should be balanced with appropriate guidance to keep them engaged.”
A second recommendation, ‘Empower teachers to make the most of digital advances’, referenced the fact that teachers can use technology and digital learning solutions to foster deeper student learning, in an online environment.
The VLC goes beyond the academic curriculum to provide for students’ holistic development, with a focus on social-emotional and spiritual development, as well as intellectual growth, in a global context. Students do a ‘deep dive’ into their learning through integrated units that show them the connections and interrelated nature of various learning areas and topics. They have the flexibility to choose when, where and how they do they learning, and families can tailor the learning program to fit with their lifestyle.
